The opening day of the world’s first specialised Spinal Cord Injury Centre was 1st February 1944. To mark the 70th anniversary of The National Spinal Injuries Centre, The Poppa Guttmann Trust honours the legacy of its founder by establishing care awards in his name.

The patients on each ward will vote for their choice of staff member of each month. They will select from the doctors, nurses, health care assistants, ward clerks, therapists, administrators and domestic staff. Judgement will obviously be based on care, but with attention paid to communication, efficiency, knowledge and support and connection with patients,
Each month's ward winner will receive a specially commissioned bronze metal badge to wear with pride in perpetuity along with a certificate.
Each ward will have an annual winner who will receive a glass trophy There will also be an annual award for The NSIC staff member overall who will receive a larger trophy and a special restaurant dinner for two.
